Sushi in Laguna Beach
After a day with the sunshine and sand, if you are thinking about sushi, Laguna Beach, CA, has lots of welcoming places to choose from. Here’s a wrap-up to help you find that perfect Laguna Beach restaurant for sushi – the meal that provides its own entertainment. Try them all and decide for yourself which is the best sushi Laguna Beach offers. Most don’t have web sites – the phone numbers are listed.
242 Cafe Fusion Sushi is at 242 N Coast Highway between Aster St. and California Highway 133, across from Main Beach, 949-494-2444. The restaurant has an ocean view and is known for fresh fish and a fun presentation. It also is known for the creations of its popular woman sushi chef, Miki Izumisawa. It’s not a large restaurant, so you may have a wait. They are open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner only.
Hapi Sushi of Laguna is at 250 Beach St., between Forest Ave and Ocean Ave., 949-494-9109. This is a small, casual, friendly restaurant, where they are happy to make special orders, and visitors say “Great beer, great sushi.” Hapi Sushi Laguna Beach is not the first choice for groups, or for children, even though they do sell some Godzilla t-shirts as well as good food.
Mosun Sushi Saki Bar & Night Club, 680 S Coast Hwy, between Cleo St and Sleepy Hollow Lane, 949-497-5646. They do have a website at www.mosunclubm.com. Mosun Sushi Laguna Beach cultivates its reputation as Orange County’s “hottest restaurant, nightclub and lounge” with a menu of Pan Asian dishes as well as sushi and an extensive variety of sake and specialty cocktails. Mosun Sushi is open Tuesday through Sunday. They have sushi bar specials (not available Wednesdays), and “Club M” is open late for dancing Fridays and Saturdays. While the prices are on the higher side, as you might expect at a fashionable spot, for every $20 you spend in the restaurant, you receive a free VIP entrance ticket to Club M (there’s a cover charge otherwise). They do accept reservations.
San Shi Go is at 1100 S Coast Highway, near the intersection with Oak St, 949-494-1551. One of the best known and oldest restaurants in town, San Shi Go is a small restaurant with a big sushi bar. It features a great ocean view, a flavorful menu of traditional, fresh dishes, and reasonable prices. Their tables may be a bit close together, but if that’s a problem for you, they have outside seating too. And of course, the sushi bar is the best seat in the house, where the chefs will create special rolls to order. This is a favorite spot for locals, and the Tempura Green Tea Ice Cream is highly recommended.
San Shi Go Sushi Laguna Beach is closed Mondays, open 5:00 to 10:00 the other nights of the week and Sundays, and a little later on Fridays and Saturdays. Good for groups but not for children, they accept reservations.
Sushi Laguna is at 231 Ocean Ave, Between Beach St and CA-1, 949-376-8786. The owner-chef of Sushi Laguna prides himself on buying fresh fish from the local market every day, for the best quality. It’s a small, cozy restaurant in the heart of Laguna Beach with upbeat music and a 22-seat sushi bar. They are open daily for lunch and dinner. Not good for groups, but good for children, and it’s not too expensive.
